A Sobering Moment

Egret’s neck has an amazing design–it is made up of three joint points (rather than multiple vertebrae of mammal necks), and this allows it to thrust its beak with spearlike speed and power. Many of my paintings depict the drama of waterbirds hunting and crabs watching and scurrying back into their holes.

Mike Lane is a native of the Virginia Coast and North Carolina’s Outer Banks, but lived and worked in Asia for the better part of the last 30 years. During that time, he learned Asian culture, and from 2008 through 2014, he studied sumi-e art with accomplished, and very patient, artists in southern China. His art applies traditional Asian watercolor medium techniques to East-Coast American landscapes, flora, and fauna.
