Ralph Thomas is a Norfolk, Virginia-based self-taught artist whose work celebrates history, culture, and community through richly textured storytelling. After serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy, Thomas returned to the passion first sparked by a childhood paint-by-numbers set while growing up on the South Side of Durham, North Carolina.

“That joy turned into a lifelong, God-gifted talent for me to tell stories, preserve memories, and give a voice to stories that are often overlooked. My art is rooted in folk tradition, but it is also deeply personal. I work primarily in oil, blending acrylic, pastel, moss, and other materials to add texture and life to my paintings.”

Thomas has earned recognition throughout Hampton Roads for artwork that honors African American history, music, and everyday life. In 2023, his painting HBCU HIGH STEPPIN’, celebrating the legacy of historically Black college and university marching bands, was featured at the Virginia Executive Mansion as part of The Art Experience. The work was later selected for a large-scale public art vinyl installation in Norfolk.

A dedicated advocate for the arts, Thomas has also created work benefiting the Jazz Legacy Foundation to support high school music programs and is a familiar presence at Aspire Art Gallery, where he mentors emerging artists alongside Gallery Director Joan Rhodes Copeland. Whether preserving memories, celebrating culture, or inspiring the next generation, Thomas creates art that tells meaningful stories with warmth, authenticity, and heart.
