Juneteenth commemorates the official emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger announced the end of slavery to those still enslaved in Galveston. This date is significant because it marked the end of slavery in the U.S., although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two years earlier.
